Two simple steps to maximise the average order value in your Shopify-store

What if I told you that there are ways that can help you increase the average order value by also increasing customer satisfaction. Sounds too good to be true right? You just have to remember two things: upselling and cross-selling. In this blog I will tell you the general idea of up- and cross-selling and how to implement both strategies in your Shopify-store!

Upselling

Upselling is a technique that persuades customers to purchase a more expensive version of a product. This works better on customers that have already bought something once in your store according to a blog from Shopify.com: “First-time buyers are 27% likely to return, but after their second or third purchase, this grows to 54%.

Upselling not only increases the average order value, but also increases customer satisfaction and Customer journey experience. By effectively using upselling you can make sure that your customers buy a product that better fits their needs. This also applies to cross-selling

An example of up-selling is: let’s say someone is in the market for a mountain bike and they visit your webshop and put a mountain bike in their cart. You can upsell by presenting similar bikes with better frames or better gears, this might satisfy the customer more since you are giving more options and adding value.

 

Cross-selling

Cross-selling is the practice of recommending items that supplement the initial product. We all know what they ask at Mcdonalds when you order a burger! “Would you like fries with that?” Essentially that is upselling.

Let’s use the mountainbike example. The customer just chose a bigger and better bike, but that is not the only thing he might need. Therefore you can recommend him cycling supplies. Helmets, bells, locks etc. Since you are helping him get the best online experience you also improve the customer satisfaction! Cross-selling can also be done Post-Purchase, for example via e-mail or after the check-out page.

Up-selling and Cross-Selling are essential strategies for Shopify store owners to increase the average order value. Up-selling is a technique that persuades customers to purchase a more expensive version of a product, while cross-selling involves recommending items that supplement the initial product. Upsells work best on repeat buyers who have already spent money in your store. You can use upsells or cross sells strategically throughout their customer journey—from the website homepage all the way through checkout pages—to encourage higher spending at every stage!
